Slow Living: A Modern Light Classic Residence by Sung Po Lin

Creating a Harmonious and Interactive Living Space

In view of the hustle and bustle of urban life, Sung Po Lin was inspired to design a residence that embraces the concept of slow living. The design aims to provide a space for relaxation and social interaction, while also incorporating areas for reading, meditation, and family bonding. By adopting a modern light classical styling, the interior and architecture harmoniously echo each other.

The uniqueness of this design lies in its innovative approach to spatial layout. Instead of the conventional residential layout, where public areas are separated, Sung Po Lin consolidated the living room, dining area, kitchen island-bench, study, and other public domains into an open yet connected core living domain. This breakthrough provides spatial semantics for the users, allowing for a seamless flow and interaction between different areas of the residence.

To maintain the layering gradation of the interior, the design team utilized demarcation tools such as arches and materials. This not only adds visual interest but also preserves the overall coherence of the space. The use of black sandalwood veneer, mirrors, titanium-plating, masonry flooring, and hand-scratched timber flooring further enhances the unique aesthetic of the residence.

The interior area of the design spans approximately 460 square meters and includes three bedroom suites, a living room, dining room, open island-bench, inner kitchen, study, and rumpus room. The open-plan layout maximizes the high-level vista and natural lighting, creating a comfortable and all-age living space.

One of the design challenges was to increase interpersonal interaction within the interior. The design team achieved this by utilizing structural elements to subtly demarcate spaces and resolve visual obstacles. This not only creates a sense of openness but also allows for maximum visual ceiling height.

The Slow Living residence was completed in October 2017 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The design was based on extensive research into the client's lifestyle and preferences. The goal was to provide a living ambiance that breaks away from the stereotypical Taiwanese residential layout, offering a space that encourages interaction, flowing circulation, and ergonomic design.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. The award acknowledges the practicality, innovation, and professional standards of the design, as well as its contribution to a better world.
